Outdoor Picks for Spring and Summer Fun
Maybe you have a patio, a backyard, a deck, or roof space that comes with your apartment. Maybe you own a home that has all of the above. Maybe you’ve got none of those but are just looking to host the best picnic Central Park has ever seen. We’re like a sensible bottle of sunscreen: we’ve got you covered.
Roofs & Decks
As with all New York spaces, it’s all about maximizing the square footage that you have to create the best layout for your needs. Lightweight chairs like these Black Molded Plastic Armchairs are easy to stack and store when the weather turns against you, but are sturdy and comfortable enough for sitting in with your coffee and the newspaper. Add a side table like this Petite Hairpin Tile-Top Accent Table to hold your drink, or wheel out the Atomic 2-Tier Metal & Laminate Bar Cart when you’re hosting a barbecue. And of course, for the full days spent outside with a page-turner of a book, you can’t beat this Shabby Painted Metal Porch Rocker.
Deluxe Spaces
If you’ve got a backyard or a sizable patio, you probably don’t need to worry about how easily movable your furniture is, and are looking for things that will stay in one place for the whole season. For a full outdoor dining set-up, pair this Black Wrought Iron and Glass Table with some Ice Cream Parlor Iron Armchairs. Both could easily do double duty indoors when the weather isn’t so friendly. For a lighter look on a front or back porch, try this White Wicker Settee with Floral Cushion as a comfortable seat for two or three (we also have a matching throne armchair). History lovers and loungers alike will enjoy these 19th Century Folding Red Canvas Beach Chairs that date back to the 1860s-1870s.
Picnics & Beach Days
New York is chock full of public parks and beaches for outdoor outings. Cruise around the city on this 1980s Fuji Allegro Men’s Bicycle or this 1960s AMF Trail Blazer Women’s Glitter Bicycle! If picnics are more your speed, this Retro Folding Picnic Table transforms from a briefcase into a full picnic table. This Blue Band Vinyl Strap Folding Lawn Chair is a great pick for all outdoor adventures, and we have a matching one in brown!
We’ve got new outdoor-friendly pieces coming into the showroom nearly every day so keep an eye on our website or stop by the showroom to step up your spring and summer game!

Fun Furniture Fact #31: Buckeye Incubator Side Table
For most people in 2018, it’s hard to imagine an incubator as a ubiquitous household item. But from the late 19th century into the first few decades of the 20th century, it was far from unusual to incubate chicken eggs inside your home or barn. Demand for chicken was rising as more Americans moved to urban environments without a chicken coop of their own. Incubators offered mechanical means of brooding eggs, prompting hens to lay them more frequently. This meant a savvy farmer could exponentially increase their profits if they yielded a good amount of chicks, but he or she had to keep a vigilant eye on the incubator’s temperature to ensure this (hence, why they needed to be indoors).
To keep the incubator at the proper temperature (102-103 degrees), these early incubators used small hot water boilers powered by kerosene. The eggs had to be turned manually for even warming. The incubation process can take up to three weeks, to yield at most 80-85% of the eggs they started with. The first major player in the American incubator market was the Buckeye, from Springfield, Ohio. As a major technological innovation that was changing the landscape of American food and farming, Buckeye incubators were prominently featured in an exhibition at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago.
Which brings us to this Buckeye Incubator Side Table. Though no longer a functional incubator, the glass-fronted cavity that once held eggs can now be used for all sorts of storage (it’s a great size for coffee table books). These legs were not originally part of this incubator, but suit the overall style well. With it now finally feeling like springtime in New York, this piece feels very seasonally appropriate. So stop by our showroom to examine this wonderful piece of American history–last one in to see it is a rotten egg!
Going Furnish Green-er: an effort to shrink our ecological footprint
With Earth Day approaching on April 22nd, we at Furnish Green found ourselves examining what we can do to make our practices even “greener.” By re-selling vintage furniture we keep these items out of landfills and minimize the impact of manufactured goods; we also use recycled materials for cleaning, packing, and filing and we repurpose as much as we can.
We’re striving to do more though, so in that spirit, we aim to lessen the amount of wasted materials used for wrapping up sold items. We will only shrink-wrap your purchased pieces if specifically requested, and we encourage you to BYOB: bring your own bags & blankets. If you provide the blanket, we’ll get it safely taped and tucked for transport! Note: we’ll automatically wrap glass pieces and mirrors because of their fragile nature.
Our goal is still, as always, to provide excellent customer service and assist in the safe transportation of your vintage purchases. Please let us know via e-mail, phone, or in person if you would prefer anything you’ve bought to be wrapped in plastic.
And don’t forget that you can take home your purchased items in an FG Tote bag, instead of using paper or plastic! $6 in the shop & online.
Dwellings Issue XV: Upper East Side
Customer: Ellen
Occupation: Executive Assistant at Refinery 29
Lived in Apartment: 2 years
FG Regular: 2 years
FG Discovery Story: A simple online search for “independent furniture stores in NYC” [that’ll do it 😉 ]
Favorite FG Purchase: Asian Lacquered Trapezoidal Bookcase
It’s been a while since we featured the apartment of an FG regular, but we’re back at it and more excited than ever! Ellen began shopping at Furnish Green when she moved into her Upper East Side apartment 2 years ago. With no distinct design style in mind, she based her purchasing around functionality. In these tiny NYC apartments, everything has to serve a purpose, and Ellen has managed to curate her space thoughtfully in a way that combines minimalist and utilitarian aesthetic with vintage charm. She has accrued a great mix of pieces; the Atomic and Rustic styles are well-represented with metal and wood as the main materials, and there’s a focus on lines and angles that flows throughout the place. Ellen’s home feels cozy yet orderly and displays an artful attention to detail. Check it out!
We hope you enjoyed this installment of our Dwellings series! Stay tuned for future posts, and email us at furnishgreen@gmail.com for a chance to have your space featured!

Step Into Our Office: Block Delivery Rates
In order to make the furniture purchasing process even easier for our customers, we offer discounted flat-rate deliveries every Tuesday and Thursday evening between 6pm & 8pm in Manhattan and between 8pm & 11pm in Brooklyn/Queens. These deliveries are all handled by a reliable local company called TDY Moving & Storage. We haven’t changed the prices for these deliveries in 7 years, but as the costs associated with furniture delivery in NYC continue to rise, we have to adjust the rates accordingly.
We believe that fair pay for labor is one of the things that makes small businesses, in particular, such an important part of shopping ethically. So in this spirit, effective March 8, 2018, our block delivery prices have been raised a modest amount. The updated rates are as follows:
- Manhattan: Starts at $80
- Manhattan above 100th: Starts at $100
- Brooklyn/Queens: Starts at $90
- Deep Brooklyn/Queens: Starts at $110
- *Walk-ups: Add’l $10 per flight // Once the price is established, these are flat-rate deliveries (no charge per item)
Our goal is to offer affordable vintage furniture with an affordable option for getting pieces safely into their new homes so we hope you understand the change. As always, thanks for being such great customers!
Sunday Selections: A Sip of Champagne with Heywood-Wakefield
We’re trying out a new feature that showcases some of the week’s new additions for our weekend shoppers.
What better companion for your brunch mimosa than some champagne furniture? Heywood-Wakefield, the iconic American furniture company, used unique stain colors for all their pieces. This week, we brought in a few different Heywood-Wakefield pieces, all in their “champagne” stain. It’s a distinctive blonde with pale pinkish undertones that is hard to capture perfectly in photographs, so we recommend seeing these beauties in person! If you’re in the market for a compact credenza, a daring desk, space age side tables, or charming chairs (2, 4, or 6, all with their original vinyl!), these may have you raising a glass to make a toast.
For the rest of this week’s new arrivals, head to the Just In page! If you want to stay in-the-know on what’s coming into the showroom daily or you’re looking for inspiration on how to incorporate vintage styles into your own space, follow @furnishgreen on Instagram!
