Dwellings Issue IV: East Williamsburg
We are excited to present the fourth installment of our Dwellings Series. This time we take you to a quaint corner of Brooklyn, into the home of a couple of Furnish Green regulars.
On a beautiful sunny fall morning, David, Amanda and Cat (their kitty who posed as a fixture in the window for most of our visit) welcomed us into their charming Brooklyn apartment. The newly married couple lives on a quiet street in East Williamsburg, a neighborhood that is of late in a constant state of flux, developing and expanding in all directions.
Years ago, Amanda was referred to Furnish Green by a friend. She still has her first purchase from the store – a darling little rustic bookshelf which resides in the kitchen and remains her favorite FG piece. Amanda has now been shopping with Furnish Green for about four years, and she has only become more enthusiastic about both vintage items and furniture, opening her own vintage focused Etsy Shop and taking a furniture appraisal course. David shares her enthusiasm, so when the couple found their new space they knew they’d be heading to Furnish Green to help furnish it, allowing them to find quality pieces within their budget. Both have certainly become familiar with our quick rate of turnover; Amanda unknowingly snatching a piece of interest to her friend, and David missing out on a Scandinavian Valet Chair by mere seconds.
Amanda’s favorite rustic shelving unit with a Mid Century umbrella stand.
David and Amanda moved into their apartment in January of 2014 and have fittingly come to define the theme of their space as “Knick Knack Attack.” Amanda, coming to New York from Florida, was unfortunately unable to bring some of her larger family heirloom furniture pieces, but the smaller knick knacks made the trip and have become fixtures in their home.
The first room we encountered was the kitchen. It features a Furnish Green farm table and great vintage folding chairs. Bright and sunshiny with marigolds, sunflowers and the walls painted a yellowish hue actually called “Sunflower”, this kitchen has an energizing effect, yet still manages to feel homey.
They explain that their honeymoon trip to India served as a source of inspiration in decorating the apartment with Indian artwork and knick knacks and a colorful paint palette.
David’s favorite piece: A Late Deco Chifferobe.
David, a life coach and massage therapist at Bodyworks DW, has taken advantage of the nature of his business and recently swapped sessions with an interior designer who is a client of his. She did a walk-through of their home, and while she approved of many of their design choices, she helped to guide them in some of the final decision making.
From desks and dressers to accent seating and compact storage pieces, these Furnish Green regulars have acquired a truly unique mix of items. Thanks to a variety of influences, outside perspectives and their own innate design sense, the apartment is becoming a comfortable and quirky space immediately welcoming guests to feel at home.

Furnish Green Furniture Drive for a Cause
For the second time, Furnish Green is collaborating with Rhythm Break Cares (RB Cares) in a vintage furniture drive! RB Cares is a 501(c)(3) non profit devoted to using partner dance as a form of dance therapy for individuals with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. Furnish Green will be accepting donated pieces** of furniture between October 20th and October 25th, and the proceeds from the donated pieces will go to the RB Cares “Dance for Dementia Programs.”
Why Rhythm Break Cares? Furnish Green’s owner Nathan Hescock is not solely a vintage furniture enthusiast. He co-founded RBC in 2009 and has since worked to demonstrate the benefits of music, movement and touch through this form of dance therapy.
What is Rhythm Break Cares? The RB Cares mission is to provide the restorative power of music, movement, and touch to older adults with dementia. Since 2009, they have utilized their love and knowledge of dance to improve the quality of life for those with all stages of dementia residing in the community or in a memory care facility. Their dance artists are professionally trained Ballroom and Modern dancers who have completed training to work with older adults with dementia.
Dance for Dementia: They have designed each program to incorporate the elements of…
Music. Songs that are inspiring or motivating promote recognition of past and present day events and allow people to communicate associations to sounds they hear.
Movement. Using simply-adopted movements promotes activity, exercise, posture, and connection. By making use of the techniques of ballroom dance specifically, we provide support for participants’ bodies and create connection.
Touch. Offering participants a method of social dance provides them with much the needed elements of touch and human interaction. By simply offering a hand, we create an inviting social environment where people feel like members and even distinguished guests.
** If you would like to donate a piece of vintage furniture for the cause, please send an email with images of the piece to furnishgreen@gmail.com ASAP. Please note: we will not be accepting all furniture as we have a limited amount of space. Pieces must be in fair condition needing minimal repairs and must fit with Furnish Green’s aesthetic.
Rhythm Break Cares Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) public charity; all donations are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law. Your donation will support their dance programs, research, raising awareness and general administration costs. Your gift will help them to accelerate their mission by ensuring that their dance therapy programs have greater reach, sharing the benefits of dance as therapy with the community and by providing the best care and support to those living with Alzheimer’s, Dementia and their caregivers.

Furnish Green & The Sketchbook Project
We are happy to announce a very cool collaboration! The Sketchbook Project of Brooklyn Art Library is hosting a pop-up shop, called The Supply Closet, at the Wythe Hotel Sunday, August 24th through Saturday, August 30th. We are very excited to have been able to provide some furniture and accent pieces for the event! Head to the space to peruse a well-curated selection of sketchbooks from the Library’s extensive stock and check out some FG pieces in a unique environment.
So we took a trip to visit the “Speakeasy” style pop-up shop, and it looks great! You can pick up some art supplies while browsing through an assortment of sketchbooks. And if you’re feeling creative, purchase your own sketchbook, fill it with ideas, and submit it to have a permanent home in the Brooklyn Art Library! The Sketchbook Project has realized a truly unique concept, so head to The Supply Shop at the Wythe Hotel and learn a bit about what they do and upcoming events they’ll be hosting.
We’ve moved.
As you may already know, our move is complete! We have transitioned into our new space on the 3rd floor (room 309), and we’re feeling pretty good about it. You’ll have to come on in and check out the fresh look and setup! Although all of the furniture has made its way downstairs, please bear with us while each piece finds its rightful home on the showroom floor.
Also, don’t miss our Grand Reopening Party on September 18th! It’s going to be a blast!
